At a pivotal moment for sustainable development in Latin America, the entertainment industry in Colombia is taking firm steps toward sustainability. MedPlus Coliseum, located in Cota (Bogotá), trusted SUMAC to achieve the prestigious LEED Silver certification, one of the most internationally recognized distinctions in sustainable construction and operations.

MedPlus Coliseum: Innovation, Technology, and Sustainability

The MedPlus Coliseum is the largest covered venue in Latin America, with a capacity of over 22,000 people. Its state-of-the-art infrastructure includes an acoustic façade, circumferential LED screens, luxury suites, and advanced ventilation systems, offering an exceptional experience for sporting, cultural, and musical events.

Through SUMAC's technical support, the Coliseum successfully integrated sustainability criteria from design through operations. "MedPlus Coliseum has established itself as a benchmark thanks to a comprehensive approach covering energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and water management. SUMAC's guidance was key to achieving this goal," noted Nicolás Martínez, SUMAC's Sustainability Supervisor and project lead.

Sustainable Strategies Implemented by SUMAC at MedPlus Coliseum

The Coliseum implemented multiple strategies with SUMAC's support and leadership, demonstrating that large-scale events and environmental commitment can go hand in hand. Among the most notable:

  • Water savings: Over 1,500,000 liters of drinking water were saved through the installation of smart fixtures and efficient hydro-sanitary systems recommended by SUMAC's technical team.

  • Energy efficiency: With SUMAC's advisory, high-performance LED lighting systems, automated on/off controls, and optimized operational management were implemented, achieving an estimated savings of 170,000 kWh — equivalent to 800 traditional light bulbs running for an entire year.

  • Heat island effect reduction: SUMAC promoted the integration of over 4,800 m² of green areas, contributing to thermal comfort and improving climate resilience in the urban environment.

  • Circular economy and waste management: In line with SUMAC's strategies, 12 tons of non-hazardous waste were converted into organic fertilizers, and over 1,000 liters of used vegetable oil were managed for biofuel production.

A New Standard for Sustainable Entertainment Venues

With the LEED Silver certification, MedPlus Coliseum becomes a sustainability benchmark for the entertainment industry in Colombia and Latin America. This achievement validates compliance with the most demanding international standards and reflects the growing public demand for responsible spaces.

"The LEED Silver certification confirms our commitment to smart, sustainable operations. At MedPlus Coliseum we are convinced that it is possible to transform the entertainment industry through conscious, measurable, and high-impact decisions," stated Carolina García, Strategic Business Manager at MedPlus Coliseum.
