SUMAC accompanied developer DRIM with Sustainable Consulting services in obtaining LEED Silver certification for its WAKE proposal. In doing so, it became one of the projects to win the Construverde 2023 Sustainable Project Award — an event that recognizes sustainable design and construction. This means that all selected projects have met the standards for energy efficiency, water conservation, and renewable materials.
"WAKE is one of the first projects to obtain LEED Silver certification in Medellín, Colombia. It sought to increase the interaction, comfort, and quality of life of people. Additionally, it has a strategic location and landscaping elements that improve potable water consumption within the project," expressed Andrés Rodríguez, Project Manager at SUMAC.
The award-winning project is a building consisting of 40 apartments of different sizes, located in the city of Medellín, Colombia. The jury decided to grant them this award because the structure has sustainable strategies in its design and construction. Additionally, it produces improvements in water and energy consumption, promoting the health and productivity of its occupants.
The WAKE proposal achieved a 23% energy saving, thanks to the implementation of vegetation roofs, an efficient lighting design, and electric vehicle charging points in the basements. It also achieved a 31.8% potable water saving through the use of high-efficiency internal hydro-sanitary elements. Additionally, vegetation capable of surviving the city's rainfall was used, so irrigation water use is mitigated 100%.
The 2023 edition was held on June 8 and 9, during the International Sustainability Week. 30 projects participated and a total of 50 distinctions were awarded for proposals certified under CASA Colombia and LEED.
