Description

La Central Shopping Center was developed under various sustainability guidelines, which allowed the project achieve a LEED Core & Shell Platinum Certification. SUMAC was the Sustainability and Energy Efficiency Consultant for the team that developed La Central. We advise them through the entire process to ensure adequate compliance with all LEED requirements. This development is located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood in the city of Medellín. The area is known as a residential sector with access to several public transportation means, including the new Tram System. During the construction of this shopping center, a Waste Management Plan was executed. A waste separation system was established, diverting more than 78% of waste from landfill.
Some of the energy efficiency strategies used throughout the project were the use of LED lighting, the installation of automatic controls throughout the building, and the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof to generate more than 5% of the total energy required by the building. The project achieved 38% more energy savings than the baseline established by the ASHRAE 90.1 2007 international standard.
